Keep It Simple

A mind map is not meant to be complicated. It is meant to be a tool to get your ideas down on paper. The simpler it is, the easier it is to remember.

Use Colors

Colors are not only a way to make your map look better, but also differentiate topics. Use a different color for each branch. These different colors help your brain separate topics.

Use Images

Images are another great way to build associations in your mind. They will also make your map look a lot better too.

Eliminate Distractions

Give yourself the time to get your map constructed. The best way to get it out there is to do it all in one sitting. You can always come back later and add stuff. But you want to get most of it out in one sitting to keep the creative juices flowing.

Don’t Give Up

If your first mind map is not a success, keep trying. It’s just like anything else, they will get better with time. The more you use mind mapping the better you will become at making them.
